eSIM Not Working? The Fixes That Solve Almost Every Case

Ranked by how often each one turns out to be the culprit — from the roaming toggle almost everyone misses, to why iMessage stops working after an eSIM switch, to the cases where the eSIM is fine and something else is wrong.

Almost every "my eSIM is not working" case comes down to one of a small number of causes, and they are not evenly distributed. The list below is ordered by how often each one actually turns out to be the problem, so working top to bottom is the fastest route.

Before starting, one rule: do not delete the eSIM profile. Most QR codes are single-use. Deleting is usually permanent and rarely fixes anything.

Quick diagnosis

Symptom Most likely cause Section
No service right after landing Roaming off for the eSIM profile 1
Connected, but nothing loads eSIM not set as the data line 2
Worked, then stopped days later Allowance used up or validity expired 5
iMessage or FaceTime broken Home line switched off 6
QR code will not scan No internet at install time 7
Worked in one city, not the next Coverage gap or manual network lock 8

1. Data roaming is off for the eSIM

This is the single most common cause, and the reasoning behind it is what makes people hesitate.

A travel eSIM does not have its own network. It carries a foreign operator profile and connects to a local network as a roaming guest — that is the whole mechanism. If roaming is disabled for that profile, the line has no way to attach to anything.

The hesitation is understandable: roaming is the word people associate with expensive bills. But the charge you are avoiding lives on your home line, not the travel eSIM. The correct configuration is:

  • Travel eSIM → data roaming ON
  • Home SIM → data roaming OFF

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → select the travel eSIM → Data Roaming. Android: Settings → Connections/Network → SIM manager → select the eSIM → Data roaming.

Check it per profile. A global roaming toggle is not the same thing.

2. The eSIM is installed but is not the data line

An eSIM can be switched on and still carry no traffic, because the phone is routing mobile data through the other line.

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → choose the travel eSIM. Android: SIM manager → Mobile data → choose the eSIM.

While you are there, turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching" on iPhone. It sounds helpful and is not — it lets the phone silently fall back to your home line, which is exactly the roaming charge you are trying to avoid.

3. Registration simply has not finished

The first attach to a foreign network is slower than people expect, especially in a busy airport where thousands of handsets are registering at once.

Give it two to three minutes. Then toggle airplane mode on and off once — this forces a fresh scan and is the most effective single action in this entire guide.

If that fails, restart the phone. A restart resolves a meaningful share of cases that airplane mode alone does not.

4. Automatic network selection picked badly

Occasionally a phone latches onto a network with poor coverage at your location, or fails to select one at all.

Turn off automatic selection and choose manually:

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → select the eSIM → Network Selection → turn off Automatic, wait for the list, pick a local operator. Android: SIM manager → the eSIM → Mobile networks → Network operators → Search networks.

Try each local operator in turn. If one connects, leave it. Remember to switch back to Automatic before travelling on to another country, or the phone will keep hunting for a network that is no longer there — a common cause of "it worked in one city and not the next."

5. The plan is finished

This one is not a fault, and it is worth checking before resetting anything.

Both an exhausted data allowance and an expired validity period end the connection quietly. The profile stays installed and looks perfectly healthy while passing no data. There is often no notification.

Two things to check with your provider:

  • Remaining data. Video, cloud photo backup and app updates consume far more than people realise. Automatic iCloud or Google Photos backup over mobile data can drain several gigabytes without any visible activity.
  • Expiry date. Most travel plans start their clock at first network connection, so a "7-day" plan bought a month early still expires seven days after you landed.

If either has run out, top up. No device-level troubleshooting will help.

To prevent a repeat: turn off automatic photo backup over mobile data, and download offline maps and translation packs before you travel.

6. iMessage, FaceTime or SMS stopped working

This is a different problem wearing the same costume, and it confuses people because it appears right after installing an eSIM.

iMessage, FaceTime and SMS are tied to your phone number — which lives on your home SIM, not the data-only travel eSIM. If you switched the home line off, those services lose their anchor and cannot re-register.

The fix:

  1. Keep the home line enabled for calls and texts, with data roaming off.
  2. Settings → Messages → Send & Receive — confirm your home number is listed and selected.
  3. Same under Settings → FaceTime.
  4. If iMessage still shows "Waiting for activation", toggle it off, wait a minute, then on again.

A data-only eSIM will never provide SMS. That is not a defect — it has no phone number to receive them at. Any service that verifies you by text message needs your home line active.

7. The QR code will not scan or install

Almost always an internet problem, and almost always at the worst moment.

Installing an eSIM downloads the profile, which requires a working connection. Trying to install at your destination — where you have no data yet — cannot work. This is why installation belongs at home, on WiFi, before departure.

Other causes, in order:

  • Screen glare or a low-resolution image. Open the QR at full size and full brightness, or use manual entry with the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email.
  • The code was already used. Most are single-use. If the profile is already on the phone, do not scan again — look under Settings for an installed but disabled line.
  • The device is carrier-locked. A locked phone rejects third-party profiles outright, no matter how many times you scan. Contact your carrier.

8. It worked, then stopped when you moved

Two likely causes:

  • A manual network selection left over from earlier troubleshooting. Set network selection back to Automatic.
  • A genuine coverage gap. Mountain valleys, tunnels, remote coastline and rural areas thin out on every network. This is not an eSIM issue and no setting will fix it — coverage returns when you do.

Still stuck? What to send support

If you have worked through all of the above, this information gets a resolution far faster:

  • Phone model and OS version.
  • Your EID — dial *#06#.
  • Whether the line appears in settings at all, and whether it is switched on.
  • Whether data roaming is on for that profile.
  • The exact status shown: "No Service", "Searching", or connected-but-no-data.
  • Where you are, and when the plan was first activated.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my eSIM not working? In most cases data roaming is switched off for the eSIM profile. A travel eSIM connects to a local network as a roaming guest by design, so roaming must be enabled for that specific profile or it will never connect. The next most common causes are that the eSIM is installed but not selected as the mobile data line, and that the first network registration has not finished yet — which can take two to three minutes after landing.

My eSIM says no service. What should I do first? Toggle airplane mode on and off once, then wait two minutes. This resolves the majority of no-service cases because it forces the phone to re-scan and register with local networks. If it does not help, check that data roaming is enabled for the eSIM profile specifically, then restart the phone, then try selecting a network manually instead of automatically.

Why did my eSIM stop working after a few days? Usually the data allowance ran out or the validity period expired. Both end the connection without an obvious warning on the phone — the line simply stops passing data while still appearing installed. Check your remaining balance and expiry date with your provider before troubleshooting the device, because no amount of resetting will restore an exhausted plan.

Why is iMessage not working after installing an eSIM? iMessage and FaceTime are tied to your phone number, which lives on your home SIM, not on the data-only travel eSIM. If your home line is switched off or has no signal, iMessage cannot re-register. Keep the home line enabled for calls and texts while using the eSIM for data, and in Settings check that iMessage is set to send and receive from your home number.

Can I reinstall an eSIM if it is not working? Usually not. Most eSIM QR codes are single-use, so deleting the profile is permanent and a replacement is not guaranteed. Never delete an eSIM as a troubleshooting step. Work through the roaming, data-line and manual-network checks first, and contact your provider before removing anything.

Does an eSIM work without WiFi? Yes, once it is installed. An eSIM needs an internet connection only to download the profile in the first place, which is why installation should happen before you travel. After installation the eSIM provides your data connection independently and no WiFi is required.

The short version

Roaming on for the eSIM, off for the home line. eSIM set as the data line. Wait three minutes, then toggle airplane mode. Check the plan has not simply run out. Do not delete anything.
